A Growing Response to Environmental Challenges

Haut-Saint-Laurent, June 2026 — As part of Water Month, the Haut-Saint-Laurent Environmental Roundtable (TCE-HSL) is highlighting a new interactive tool developed by Groupe Ambioterra to better coordinate efforts aimed at protecting water resources and natural environments across the region.

This new database brings together, in a single location, the various conservation and environmental protection plans currently active throughout the territory. The tool makes it possible to identify targeted natural environments, protected species, the most prevalent environmental threats, and the actions being implemented by regional organizations and partners.

In a region where wetlands, rivers, and riparian habitats play a central role in environmental priorities, this tool arrives at a critical time. The initiatives documented demonstrate growing mobilization around water protection, particularly in response to issues such as shoreline erosion, habitat degradation, agricultural impacts, invasive alien species, and water quality concerns.

Several strategic areas of the Haut-Saint-Laurent are already benefiting from conservation and restoration efforts, particularly around the Châteauguay, Noire, Trout, and des Anglais rivers. These initiatives aim not only to preserve biodiversity but also to protect the water resources upon which local communities depend.

Making Environmental Information Accessible to Citizens

Beyond the work of experts and environmental organizations, this initiative also represents good news for the residents of the Haut-Saint-Laurent. By bringing environmental information together in an accessible and structured format, the tool helps people better understand the issues that directly affect water quality, the natural spaces frequented by families, and the green areas that contribute to quality of life throughout the region.

For residents, this also means greater visibility into projects taking place near their communities, the species and habitats protected within their municipalities, and the concrete actions being taken to preserve the territory for future generations. Centralizing this information also facilitates citizen participation and encourages stronger collaboration among communities, municipalities, and environmental organizations.

A Tool Designed to Foster Collaboration

The platform allows users to search according to various criteria, including natural environments, targeted species, environmental threats, and conservation objectives. Its purpose is to encourage knowledge sharing, regional collaboration, and the development of more effective collective actions.

A total of 27 environmental protection plans developed by 10 organizations have been catalogued in the database, highlighting the importance placed on protecting water resources and biodiversity throughout the Haut-Saint-Laurent.
